Breastfeeding in a baby carrier – why and how?

Breastfeeding is possible in all types of baby carriers. In some, it comes more naturally, while in others, it is a bit more cumbersome. Of course, it can happen that breastfeeding in a carrier feels uncomfortable for someone, only works in certain types of carriers, or, for whatever reason, doesn't work at all. Even if it seems tricky at first, it is worth practicing or even seeking expert advice, because for anyone who can nurse this way, this option is a tremendous help.

Why and in what situations do we nurse in a carrier?

This can happen at home when the baby is placed in the carrier to calm down or fall asleep, but then starts rooting for the breast. In such cases, there is no need to take them out; instead, we can try offering the breast while carrying, and once they have calmed down or fallen asleep, continue carrying in the „normal” position.

This skill also comes in handy at home when older siblings need our attention or there are other urgent tasks to take care of while the baby wants to nurse. Of course, it is by no means easy to multitask with a baby nursing in a carrier. Mainly because you will likely only have one hand free, but if you truly need this solution, it works and can be put to good use.

Carrying and rocking can also increase the baby's desire to nurse due to the proximity of the breast and direct physical contact, driven by the continuous, invisible hormonal communication between baby and mother.

Or, for instance, a baby with tight muscle tone may relax more easily and open their mouth wider in a nicely rounded carrying position. Thus, it is clear that nursing in a carrier is also worth trying in the case of certain breastfeeding difficulties.

On the go, being able to nurse the baby in a carrier can also be a huge relief.

On the one hand, it allows for discreet breastfeeding—those around us usually won't even notice what's happening. On the other hand, there are times when we can't sit down anywhere, and without a carrier, we would only be able to nurse the baby while standing and holding them in our arms.

As mentioned above, breastfeeding can be managed in any baby carrier.

The in ema design mei tais works in both front and hip carries by slightly loosening the carry, lowering the baby, and aligning them with the breast.

A ring sling , on the other hand, is the ultimate carrying-and-nursing wonder tool! The baby is very easy to position anywhere on our body, and latching is simple not only vertically, but also reclined and in a cradle hold—in fact, even the football hold can be achieved with it.

The connection between breastfeeding and clothing

Pay special attention to one thing: wear clothes that actually allow for breastfeeding in a carrier. At times like this, it is impossible—or at least very difficult—to pull up a T-shirt from the bottom or take off a sweater.

The following types of clothing work: pieces where you can pull the breast upward because the fabric is stretchy enough or the neckline is deep enough. Wrap styles and garments specifically designed with nursing openings that remain accessible even under the carrier.

This is the exact consideration behind the ema design nursing collection, the Flawless Fantasy momdress and the Timeless Treasure momdress. In addition to being eye-catching pieces, nursing in a carrier can easily be achieved in them as well.
